🤝 Go-To’s for Better Guest Interviews

Podcast interviews don’t have to be boring. Shift the focus! Listeners are tired of bio read-throughs or the “tell us about yourself” questions that guests are asked on every interview.

There are many ways you can keep your audience listening and your guest engaged in the conversation but here are a few fool-proof methods to get the conversation flowing right away:

▶️ Quickly introduce your guest to the audience

▶️ Highlight the guest’s expertise

▶️ Ease the guest into sharing their story

Instead of reading through their bio as the introduction, ask them questions that naturally showcase their expertise and accomplishments. Get your guest doing what you brought them here to do – talk about themselves and their work! Here’s some leading questions you could ask:

âť“Your work in [field/industry] has been quite impactful. Could you share a pivotal moment in your career that shaped your journey?

âť“I was fascinated by your recent project on [topic]. Can you walk us through the concept and what inspired you to pursue it?

âť“You have a unique approach to [topic]. How did you develop this perspective?

âť“In your book/article/talk about [subject], you presented some groundbreaking ideas. [Share a short summary of one or two of these ideas] What led you to these insights?

Audiences today love to hear personal stories that make your guest who they are, so use that to your advantage to keep your guest talking and your audience listening. Many podcast episodes can get stuck on the guest’s past then they run out of time or lose focus on current and future projects so be sure to cover that in an impactful way. Some examples:

âś… What would you say your turning point was and how did it lead you to where you are today?

âś… Your journey from [early career/life experience] to now is quite inspiring. What was a key lesson(s) you learned along the way?

✅ You’re currently working on [project/initiative]. What’s the driving force behind it, and what impact do you hope to achieve?

âś… Tell us about your [latest venture]. What challenges are you addressing right now, and what excites you most about this project?

âś… Looking at the future of [industry/topic], what are your predictions, and how do you see your role evolving over time?

✅ What’s next for you? Are there any unexplored areas or projects that you’re particularly excited about?

Having leading questions for your guest will:

🌟 Keep the chat focused

🌟 Help you guide the conversation

🌟 Encourage guests to share more details, making your podcast richer

🌟 Highlight your guest’s expertise

🌟 Show you’re prepared

🌟 Make your podcast more engaging

An opening interview question can captivate an audience from the start. What’s one interview question that you’re particularly proud of using?

Reply and let me know! Maybe it’ll prompt me to give your podcast a listen!
