Someone asked me recently what podcasters do when it comes to using ‘foul’ language in the name of a podcast series. That opened a bigger discussion… when and where is it okay to use ‘swear words’ on a podcast, if at all?

Explicit language can influence the visibility and audience perception of your podcast. Podcast platforms like Apple and Spotify have strict guidelines on explicit content, which may affect your podcast’s discoverability.

1. Know the guidelines: Understand the rules of the platform you’re using. Most platforms require you to mark episodes as explicit if they contain strong language.
2. Think about your audience: Explicit content can turn some people away, especially those who listen with family or in public places.
3. Selective explicit marking: If you occasionally use explicit language, it’s best to mark those specific episodes as explicit rather than labeling your entire show. This approach respects your audience’s preferences while maintaining flexibility.

Using explicit language can limit your reach due to platform algorithms potentially downranking explicit content. However, being authentic and true to your style is crucial to connect with an audience.

• Episode-Specific Tracks: Create unique tracks for special episodes or segments, giving each one a personalized touch.
• Popular Style Songs: If you are a fan of a popular song, artist, or band and don’t have the rights to use it in your podcast, having an AI-made inspiration song in their style is a suitable alternative.

Finding Inspiration for Generating Popular AI-Music

When generating AI-music you can’t directly prompt it to sound like a famous artist or band. The best way to get around this? Have ChatGPT describe the famous artist, band, and song style and use that description to generate AI music in that style.

Steps to Get Started

1. Choose an AI Music Generator: I recommend Suno.AI. I find it has delivered the best results and is the easiest for me to use. 
2. Define Your Style: Determine the type of music that best fits your podcast’s tone. Experiment with different genres and moods.
3. Integrate and Edit: Incorporate the AI-generated music into your podcast using your editing software. Adjust volume levels to ensure the music complements your dialogue without overpowering it. (or try a tool like Auphonic.com to help level and enhance the audio.
4. Seek Feedback: Ask your listeners for feedback on the new musical elements. Use their input to fine-tune your approach.

• Consistency is Key: While experimenting is great, maintaining a consistent musical theme helps in brand recognition.
• Keep it Balanced: Ensure that the music enhances rather than distracts from your content.
• Stay Updated: AI technology is rapidly evolving. Keep an eye on new tools and features that can further enhance your podcast.
