đŸ’Ș Overcoming Fear in Podcasting in 2025

👋Hey there Podcaster!

As the holiday season kicks into full swing, I’m reminded of one of my favorite parts of podcasting — connection. Just like a great podcast episode, the best moments of the holidays are the ones that make you pause, listen, and feel something real.

Whether you’re wrapping up your own podcast season or gearing up for a big start in 2025, I hope you take some time to celebrate your wins (big and small), recharge, and soak in the moments that matter most. This is your reminder that it’s okay to press “pause” on the hustle. Inspiration hits hardest when you give it some breathing room.

If you’re looking for one last boost before the new year, I’ve got something cooking for the first quarter of 2025. (Hint: It’s for the podcasters who want ways to earn money in 2025) Stay tuned.

Here’s to a season full of ideas, rest, and a few ‘wow’ moments. You deserve it. Now, let’s dig into today’s newsletter

đŸ’Ș Overcoming Fear in Podcasting

If you’ve been dreaming about starting a podcast but find yourself hesitating, you’re not alone. This week on the Podcasting Morning Chat, we talked about every aspect of the biggest barrier for most new podcasters—fear.

đŸ˜©What if I sound like I’m rambling?

đŸ˜©What if nobody listens?

đŸ˜©What if my voice sounds terrible

These questions keep aspiring podcasters stuck in “idea mode,” endlessly planning but never pressing “record.” But here’s the truth: you don’t overcome fear by thinking your way out of it. You overcome it by doing. Here are some highlights and practical advice from our discussion:

🧊 Jump In, Even if the Water’s Cold

One guest on the show likened podcasting to jumping into an ice-cold pool. It’s shocking at first, but you adjust quickly. Thinking about how cold the water is won’t warm it up—you just have to leap. It’s the same with podcasting. The first time you press “record” might feel daunting, but every subsequent time gets easier.

🏃 Start Before You Feel Ready

I’ve heard countless stories from podcasters who planned to build their social media following or perfect their format before launching. But the “perfect moment” never came. Instead, they started, even when they felt unprepared. The result? New connections, growing audiences, and opportunities they never anticipated.

⛰ Your Purpose Is Bigger Than Your Fear

One question I always encourage new podcasters to ask is: *Why do I want to start this podcast?* When your purpose is clear and deeply meaningful, it fuels you to keep going—even on challenging days. Your message matters. Someone out there needs to hear what you have to say.

Practical Tips to Get Started

đŸŽ™ïžPractice Talking: Start by recording yourself speaking for 10-15 minutes about a topic you’re passionate about. Use a simple outline with bullet points—don’t overthink it.

đŸ€ Accept Imperfection: Podcasting isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being authentic. You can always edit out mistakes or retake a segment. Remember, no one’s first episode is flawless.

đŸ€ Keep It Short: If going solo feels overwhelming, start with shorter episodes. Many successful solo podcasters keep their episodes between 5 and 15 minutes, delivering concise and engaging content.

đŸ€ Join a Community: Don’t underestimate the value of connecting with other podcasters. A supportive community can provide encouragement, feedback, and inspiration.

Whether you’re contemplating your first episode or struggling to keep going, remember this: You’re not just starting a podcast. You’re creating something meaningful, for yourself and for others.

If 2025 is your year to launch your podcast, I’m here to help. Let’s make it happen together. Reach out to start the conversation.

In the meantime, check out this week’s episode for more insights on overcoming fear and embracing the solo podcasting journey.

đŸ€ Secrets to Trailers and Storytelling

Earlier this month on the Podcasting Morning Chat, we talked about podcast trailers and storytelling. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been at it for a while now, I want to share some tips that can help you step up your podcast promotion game and engage your audience in unique and effective ways.

đŸȘ Hook Them in the First Few Seconds

You’ve got a short window to capture your audience’s attention, so make it count. One thing we talked about was how a killer trailer can lock listeners in from the get-go. Take a page from the “Diary of a CEO” playbook—they’re experts at creating trailers that pull you into the story immediately. They use a mix of audio clips, music, and narration to create a journey in under two minutes.

Here’s how to do it:

Start with a powerful question or bold statement. Something like, “What if everything you thought about success was wrong?” grabs attention fast.

Blend audio clips from your episode with narration. This way, you’re not just telling your audience what to expect—you’re showing them.

Build curiosity. Leave them wanting more. A good trailer teases the value or story you’re going to deliver without giving it all away.

📖 Narrate the Journey

A great podcast is more than just a conversation or a collection of tips 7 tricks; Think of your episodes as mini-movies. Narrate the journey for your audience. Instead of saying, “This week, we’re talking about astrophysics,” try something like, “How did a team of scientists almost discover the origin of time and space, only to have their dreams crushed?”

Your goal is to take your audience on a ride:

– Start with a setup that sparks curiosity.

– Build tension with compelling details.

– Deliver the payoff, whether it’s a big reveal, a lesson, or an inspiring conclusion.

đŸ“č Use Clips Strategically

One of the best tips we discussed is to use clips strategically in your promotions. Instead of just posting a random snippet from your show, pair it with narration that sets the stage. For example:

– Narrator: “How did Brian Keating almost win a Nobel Prize but ended up heartbroken instead? Here’s a snippet.”

– Play an emotional or intriguing clip.

This creates context and hooks your audience by setting the tone and framing the clip as part of a larger story.

😅 Embrace Video (But Don’t Sweat It Too Much)

If you’re intimidated by high-production trailers with flashy visuals, don’t worry. You don’t need Hollywood-level production to make an impact. Even a simple video with captions, your voice, and a few dynamic visuals can go a long way. The key is to focus on storytelling over polish.

Some easy video ideas:

Narrated Audiograms with visuals: Pair audio clips with simple text, video and images.

Talking Head Intros: Just you, your mic, and a quick pitch about why this episode rocks.

Behind-the-Scenes Footage: Share clips of you recording or setting up your studio. It adds a personal touch.

🔎 Be Consistent but Experiment

Consistency is crucial, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Try different trailer styles, lengths, and formats to see what resonates with your audience. Maybe one week you go for a suspenseful, cinematic approach, and the next you try a playful, conversational tone. The goal is to keep your audience engaged and excited to see what you’ll do next.
