🎨 Your Look Is Part of Your Hook

🎨 Your Look Is Part of Your Hook

đź‘‹Hey there Podcaster!

🎨 This week we’re diving into the power of visual branding—and how a signature look can make your podcast instantly recognizable.

🏆 I’m also excited to share some personal news: I was honored as one of the Top 50 Podcasters Over 50 at the Gold Mic Awards.

🎤 Plus, the Empowered Podcasting Conference 2025 is shaping up, and we’re calling for speakers and sponsors.

You’ll also find the latest Podcasting Morning Chat highlights, and a special Listener’s Corner feature where we want to feature your show. Let’s get into it 👇

🎨 Your Look Is Part of Your Hook

Many podcasters obsess over what they say…

But they forget what their audience sees.

I’ve experienced this firsthand.

I didn’t announce anything when I added a blue mic cover and LED lighting behind me. But people noticed. I’ve had comments like:

👉 “Where’d you get that mic cover?”
👉 “What’s that blue glow in the background?”
👉 “Your setup made me stop scrolling.”

That’s the power of visual branding.

Whether you’re doing full video podcasting or sharing clips on socials, your look can become a recognizable part of your band in your podcast videos and social clips.

Just like your voice, music, or format, your visuals tell a story before you say a word.

We had a great conversation about this on the Podcasting Morning Chat. Your setup is part of your brand identity. Mic covers, lighting, background props and even wardrobe choices all play a part.

Branding isn’t about slapping your logo on everything.

It’s about being memorable.
Being recognizable.
It’s about making someone pause and say, “Oh yeah, I’ve seen this person before.”

So here’s my question for you:

🎥 What’s your visual branding strategy?
🎙️ What makes your podcast instantly recognizable—even on mute?

🎤 ICYMI: I Was Honored at the Gold Mic Awards! 🏆

So, something really special happened this past weekend. On Friday night, I was recognized as one of the Top 50 Podcasters Over 50 at the “50 Over 50 Awards,” hosted by Jen Hardy and the amazing team at Hardy House Media.

I’m incredibly honored, and more than that — I’m grateful. Grateful for the community that’s grown around me, for the co-hosts who’ve pushed me to show up better, and for my team that keeps the wheels turning behind the scenes. You know who you are. This award is as much yours as it is mine.

On last Friday’s episode of the Podcasting Morning Chat, 24x award-winning podcaster (co-host and friend) Dominic Lawson (Black is America) dropped a gem that really stuck with me:

You can’t win awards you don’t apply for. This isn’t just about collecting trophies…it’s about visibility. It’s about positioning. Awards are a powerful tool for discoverability, and when you’re building something from scratch, you’ve got to use every tool you can.

Even just being nominated means your work is standing out — and that matters. It builds credibility. Opens doors. Gets you in rooms you may not have otherwise entered — whether that’s with sponsors, speaking opportunities, or clients. Just ask Dominic — he credits his award wins with landing a speaking slot at Podcast Movement. That’s the real impact.

Yes, sometimes there’s a submission fee. That’s normal. That’s part of the game. Film, music, books — podcasting is just catching up. And honestly? That’s a good thing.

So thank you to everyone who’s been along for this ride — cheering me on, working with me, trusting me with your shows, or just pressing play. I share this recognition with all of you.

And if you’ve been thinking about throwing your name in the ring for something? Do it. Don’t wait for permission. Apply. Nominate yourself. You never know where it might lead.
