🎙️Beyond the Download Count

July 05, 20265 min read

👋Hey there Podcaster!

What if the thing holding you back from monetizing your podcast wasn't your audience size at all? Last week we challenged some common assumptions about sponsorships, took a closer look at what really qualifies as a business expense, and explored why community may be the most valuable thing you can build as a creator.

🎯The Business Test Every Creator Could Use

One of my favorite conversations last week started with a question I hadn't expected to ask.

I've been thinking about learning to DJ. Not radio DJing, but the kind where you play music at live events. I wanted to buy a few hundred dollars' worth of equipment, but I wasn't sure if it belonged in my personal budget or if it could legitimately be purchased through iRonick Media.

When I asked Ralph Estep Jr., it came down to one question: Can you clearly connect that purchase to what your business actually does? Because iRonick Media already operates in the media and entertainment space, DJ equipment could support live events, networking, and audience engagement. That connection made all the difference.

It's an idea that reaches far beyond taxes. Every course, conference, piece of software, microphone, camera, or new skill should have a clear purpose in helping your business grow. If you can explain how it serves your business, you're making a business decision. If you can't, it probably belongs in your personal budget instead. It's a simple way to think about every purchase before you make it.

What purchase have you made that started as "just for fun" but ended up becoming an important part of your business?

💰 Your Podcast Has More Value Than You Think

Most podcasters assume sponsorships begin with download numbers. How many listeners do I need? When will brands take me seriously? At what point am I finally "big enough?"

Last week we challenged that entire mindset.

Your podcast is much more than an RSS feed. Your newsletter, website, YouTube channel, social media, live events, and even the trust you've built with your audience all create value. One of my favorite insights came when Ralph reminded us that our audience is our most valuable piece of real estate. Everything else only matters because people trust us first.

Instead of asking how many downloads you need before approaching sponsors, try asking yourself a different question: What have I already built that could genuinely help a business reach the right people? You may be much closer to your first sponsorship than you realize.

💬 Community Is Still Podcasting's Biggest Advantage

Technology keeps changing.

Last week we talked about Riverside's new expanding workflow, fresh podcast listening research, and where the industry appears to be heading. But underneath all of those conversations was something much more important.

People stay because of people.

Whether we were talking about podcast communities, audience trust, or the relationships creators build with one another, the message stayed remarkably consistent. Listeners don't become loyal because everything is perfectly produced. They stick around because they feel connected.

That's one of the reasons I'm so excited about Empowered Podcasting. Yes, we'll be talking AI, production, monetization, and growth strategies. But the relationships you build with other creators often become just as valuable as anything you learn during a session.

If your podcast disappeared tomorrow, would your audience miss your content... or would they miss being part of your community?

Indie podcasting can feel lonely, confusing, and way harder than it should.

That's exactly why we've built the Empowered Podcasting Conference.

It's a weekend for indie and DIY podcasters to get around people who understand the work, share what's actually helping, and build real relationships that last beyond the event.
