πŸŽ™οΈ Podcasting Has a Way of Humbling You

June 02, 2026β€’5 min read

πŸ‘‹Hey there Podcaster!

Podcasting has a funny way of teaching lessons that no course, YouTube video, or social media post can fully prepare you for.

Sometimes it's realizing that growth takes longer than you expected. Sometimes it's finally getting comfortable on camera after months of feeling awkward. Sometimes it's discovering that a piece of advice everyone repeats doesn't actually apply to your show.

This week, our conversations kept circling back to one idea: some of the most important things in podcasting can only be learned by doing the work.

πŸš€ Growth Takes Longer Than You Want It To

A new RSS.com survey found that audience growth is still the biggest challenge for podcasters. Not AI. Not monetization. Not video.

Growth.

That stood out to me because creators are doing more than ever before.

They're publishing video, creating social clips, experimenting with AI tools, and investing in software and services. Yet many still feel like they're not getting the traction they hoped for.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is creators changing direction too quickly. A strategy gets a few weeks. The numbers don't move. The doubt creeps in. Then it's on to the next tactic.

The challenge is that meaningful growth often happens much slower than we expect. Consistency rarely feels exciting in the moment, but it's usually where the real progress happens.

What strategy in your podcasting journey might deserve more time before you decide it's not working?

πŸŽ₯ Confidence Doesn't Come First

Last week, Katie Fawkes from Ecamm shared her journey from someone who dreaded being on camera to someone who now hosts multiple live video shows.

What resonated with me wasn't the technology or the gear discussion. It was the reminder that confidence isn't usually the starting point.

Most creators assume they'll begin once they feel ready.

The reality is that confidence often shows up after you've done the thing enough times to realize it wasn't as scary as you imagined.

We also talked about audio quality, and one point kept coming up. Viewers will often tolerate imperfect video. They'll stick around through average lighting and less-than-perfect camera angles. Poor audio is a much harder hurdle to overcome.

The goal isn't perfection. The goal is creating a better experience for the people who choose to spend time with your content.

Where are you waiting for confidence when experience might be the thing that creates it?

πŸ€– Technology Changes. Trust Still Matters.

Podcasting continues to evolve at a remarkable pace.

This past week, we discussed Spotify's push toward more interactive podcast experiences, Amazon's AI-generated Alexa Podcasts, and companies producing thousands of AI-generated episodes every week.

The technology itself is fascinating. The questions it raises may be even more important. When AI creates personalized audio content for a single listener, is it still a podcast? How much transparency should creators provide when AI is involved? What role will platforms play as these tools become more powerful?

We don't have all the answers yet.

What I do know is that technology keeps changing, while trust remains one of the most valuable things a creator can build. Audiences return because they trust the voice behind the microphone, the perspective being shared, and the relationship that's been built over time.

As podcasting continues to evolve, I suspect trust will only become more important.

What do you think creators should be paying the closest attention to right now: AI, video, interactivity, or ownership?
