🎙️The Decisions That Define Your Podcast

July 28, 20265 min read

👋Hey there Podcaster!

Every podcaster wants a formula for success.

Last week reminded me that there probably isn't one. Instead, every decision we make comes with a trade-off. The challenge isn't finding the perfect answer. It's understanding what we're willing to gain, and what we're willing to give up.

🎙️Every Decision Costs You Something

Last week, we played a simple game called,“Podcaster, Pick Just One” on the Podcasting Morning Show. There was only one rule: no one could answer, "It depends."

Would you rather have 10,000 passive listeners or 500 who actively engage with your show? Creative freedom or guaranteed income? A viral episode or steady growth?

As each question came up, it became clear that there weren't any universally right answers. There were only different priorities.

One discussion stuck with me in particular. Almost everyone agreed they'd rather have a smaller audience that listens, responds, shares, and takes action than a much larger audience that simply shows up in the analytics. That doesn't mean download numbers don't matter. They absolutely do. But engagement creates opportunities that downloads alone often can't.

I think that's true beyond podcasting. We spend a lot of time looking for the "best" strategy when the better question is whether we're making intentional choices. Every path closes one door while opening another.

What trade-off are you making today that could shape where your podcast is a year from now?

Indie podcasting can get lonely.

You’re trying to improve your content, grow an audience, understand video, explore monetization, keep up with AI, and remain consistent. You’re often figuring out all of it by yourself.

That’s why we created the Empowered Podcasting Conference.

It’s a weekend where indie and DIY podcasters can learn from one another, talk honestly about what’s working, and build relationships with people who understand the work.

💡Your Episode Isn’t the Finish Line

One of my favorite conversations from last week was on Thursday with marketing strategist Eddie Garrison.

He challenged a mindset I think many podcasters still have: we treat the episode as the final product. In reality, it's just the starting point.

A single conversation can become weeks of meaningful content. A thoughtful LinkedIn post. An email. A short video. A quote graphic. Instead of constantly asking, "What should I post today?" you already have the answer sitting inside the episode you worked so hard to create.

The goal isn't to flood every social platform with content. It's to continue the conversation in ways that reach people who may never have discovered your podcast otherwise.

Are you creating more content than you need to because you're overlooking the value of the content you've already made?

🤝Media Partner Spotlight: Podpage

I’m excited to have Podpage as a media partner for Empowered Podcasting 3.

Podpage makes it easy for podcasters to create a professional website for their show without needing to design or build one from scratch. It’s a platform I regularly recommend to podcasters who want a stronger home for their episodes, email list, reviews, and audience growth. Plus, I’m a very satisfied Podpage user myself!

I’m grateful to have their support as we continue building EPC3!

🤔 The Business of Podcasting Keeps Changing

Last week's “News & Comment” episode started with something that caught everyone's attention: AI-powered podcast ad blockers.

Whether these tools become mainstream or not almost misses the bigger point. They force us to think differently about how podcasts create value.

For years, sponsorships have centered around the host-read ad. But what happens if technology makes those easier to skip? The conversation naturally shifted toward offering sponsors something larger than a sixty-second commercial. Communities. Newsletters. Live events. Social media. Relationships.

The creators who adapt first are usually the ones who thrive when the industry changes.

If traditional podcast advertising looked very different five years from now, how would your show continue creating value?
