🎙️ When the Industry Shifts, Your Story Still Matters

March 22, 20266 min read

👋Hey there Podcaster!

I’ve spent a lot of time this week thinking about the difference between "content" and "connection."

It’s easy to get caught up in the gears of this industry. The acquisitions, the new tech, the constant pressure to "go video." But at the end of the day, we aren't just making files to be downloaded, we’re building spaces where people feel seen, heard, and understood.

This week on the Podcast Morning Chat, we dug into some big shifts that remind us why the human element is the only thing that actually scales.

Here is what I’ve been reflecting on from our conversations this week…

The "Future Nausea" of AI and the Power of the Doorway

We kicked off the week with an "Obsession Worthy Podcast" breakdown of theSearch Enginepodcast, specifically their episode on why the AI model Claude was behaving strangely.

Jonathan Howardpointed out something brilliant about how the host, PJ Vogt opens his show. He doesn't start with a technical lecture on AI and Large Language Models. He starts with a feeling he calls "future nausea". That uneasy sensation we all get when we realize technology might be moving faster than our ability to keep up.

In podcasting, we call this the "doorway."

If you start your episode with "Today we're talking about X," you're giving a lecture. But if you start with an emotional experience or a destabilizing question, you're opening a door. Once your listener is inside, they’ll follow you through the complicated stuff. But you have to get them in the room first.

The Question:What is the "doorway" for your next episode? Are you leading with a topic, or are you leading with a feeling?

Is Your Podcast "Too Conversational"?

We tackled a great question from long time community member,Simona Costantinithis week: Is there such a thing as a podcast that istooconversational?

We’ve all heard the pitch: "It’s just like a conversation you’re eavesdropping on." But as regular listener Nikki shared, "natural" shouldn't mean "winging it."

When a show has no direction and the host and guest are just chasing tangents, the listener eventually feels like an uninvited guest at a private party. They lose the thread and then they lose interest.

The best conversational podcasts have a subtle but firm structure. As a host, your job is to be the guide. You want the flow to feel organic, but you need to know exactly where the destination is. It’s about finding that balance between the "babble" and "breakthrough."

Question for you:If a stranger sat down in the middle of your last recording, would they know exactly what the point of the conversation was within 60 seconds?

The Ecosystem Era: Podpage Acquires School of Podcasting

Wednesday brought some massive industry news.Podpagehas officially acquired the School of Podcasting, bringing Hall of FamerDave Jacksoninto their broader strategy.

I had Dave on the show to talk about it, andRalph Estep Jr.hit the nail on the head: we are entering the "Ecosystem Era."

This a retention move. The number one reason people leave Podpage isn't because they hate the tool, it's because they stop podcasting. By bringing Dave’s legendary coaching into the fold, Podpage is betting that better-educated podcasters are more successful podcasters.

It’s a reminder for all of us: your tools only matter if you have the skills and the community to keep using them.

The Question:What are you doing this week to invest in yourskillsas a creator, not just your software?
